The reason St. Petersburg decided to trade Yakupov is reportedly because the team wanted him to renegotiate his contract. He refused. It is now being reported that Amur also insisted he renegotiate and, once again, Yakupov said no, leading to this latest trade.
After failing to make any kind of mark in the NHL despite being a highly-touted prospect, Yakupov signed with St. Petersburg in 2018. His numbers are slightly better in the KHL. However, they are nothing to write home about. This season, he had 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists) in 46 games. In the previous year, he had 33 points (23 goals, 10 assists) in 47 games.
Yakupov broke into the NHL scene with a splash, scoring 17 goals and 31 points in 48 games in his rookie season, which had been shortened to 48 games by a lockout. With that, it looked like the young Russian forward was on track for a tremendous career that would see him grow into a dominant offensive weapon. Yakupov regressed heavily in his next season, and never topped the 17 goals he scored as a rookie. He left Edmonton after just four seasons, and couldn't find a full-time role in St. Louis. His last season in the NHL came with Colorado, where he put up nine goals and 16 points in 58 games.
