Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the NHL is exploring the idea of selling advertisements on players' helmets.

Friedman mentioned that it was a topic brought up on Wednesday's Board of Governors call, however there will not be any formal comment on the matter until team presidents are briefed this upcoming Monday. Given the current situation of the league due to money lost as a result of the pandemic, it is considering new ways to increase revenue going forward. Friedman also brought up the fact that ads on jerseys will come eventually, but there is a desire to be careful with it.

The other reason, Friedman went on to discuss, that they may start with helmets is to get a feel for where the market stands during COVID. It is important for them not to rush into any type of deal when it comes to putting advertisements on helmets and jerseys so that they are able to get the best bang for their buck. This is something that many European leagues have done for quite some time, as many of their jerseys are filled with ads. The league likely doesn't want to go that far, but expect to possibly see some sponsors on helmets in the near future.
