Domi to wait before deciding on playoff participation

The Montreal Canadiens are giving forward Max Domi more time before he decides whether to participate in the NHL's 24-team Return to Play format. Players are supposed to state their intent to either play or opt out by Monday afternoon, but Domi has been granted an exemption by the league.

"Considering Max's health condition (Type 1 diabetes), both parties have agreed to take this responsible approach and to take this time to evaluate the ongoing situation, in order to make the best decision for Max's health at the end of this period," stated the Habs in a news release.

Having Type 1 diabetes makes Domi more susceptible to serious complications should he contract COVID-19. The 25-year-old tallied 17 goals and 27 assists in 71 games in 2019-20.

The Habs will also be without defenceman Karl Alzner for the qualifying rounds. He has informed the team that he is opting out. While no specific reason was given, Alzner has played only 13 games in the past two years after not missing an NHL game for eight consecutive seasons. He's spent much of his time in the AHL after his play dropped off considerably following his signing with the Montreal Canadiens. The only way alzner was making it into the team's lineup was after several injuries on the blueline. The fifth overall pick in 2007 has seven years of playoff experience, all with the Washington Capitals.
