Canucks' Sven Beartschi opts out of returning for playoffs
The Vancouver Canucks will not have the option of adding Sven Beartschi to the lineup when the team faces Minnesota in the qualifying round of the NHL's Return to Play format. The forward has informed the team he will not be participating.
"Sven informed us late yesterday that he has chosen to opt out of the NHL return to play program,” Canucks general manager Jim Benning said in a statement. “It was a difficult decision but ultimately one we respect and understand.”
The team has chosen to add Kole Lind to its roster as a replacement. Lind, 21, had 30 points in 61 AHL games this season.
As for Beartschi, The 27-year-old only appeared in six games with the Canucks this season, his fifth with the organization. He has one year left on his contract with a cap hit of $3.3 million.
Baertschi was placed on waivers by the Canucks at the end training camp last fall but recalled him in early November after Micheal Ferland suffered a concussion. He was placed on waivers a second time on Dec. 15 after the team tried to trade him and he spent the remainder of the season with Utica of the AHL.
No specific reason has been given for his absence. He is the second player known not to be returning for the August 1st start. The Calgary Flames have announced that defenceman Travis Hamonic will not be participating due to "family considerations."
