Steven Stamkos, Greg Pateryn suffer injuries during Phase 2 activities
The Tampa Bay Lightning have announced that captain Steven Stamkos will not be participating in the team's training camp when it open on July 13th. GM Julien BriseBois said Stamkos suffered a new lower-body injury while taking part in optional skates during Phase 2 and won't be at full participant at the start of training camp. He's getting treatment and doing land work right now and is expected to be ready for the start of the Return to Play playoff format on August 1st.
Stamkos, 30, has suffered a number of injuries throughout his career, despite being an elite level player. He played just 17 games in the 2016-17 season due to injuries, while managing just 37 in 2013-14 and 48 in 2012-13. Before play was suspended on March 12th, the former first overall pick had scored 29 goals and 66 points in 57 games.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild are reporting that defenceman Greg Pateryn is likely out of the Return to Play format no matter how long his team manages to stay in it. He is listed as out indefinitely with a upper-body injury.
Pateryn, 30, appeared in just 20 games for Minnesota during the regular season after missing the first part of the 2019-20 campaign because of bilateral core muscle repair surgery.
The Michigan native is in the second year of a three-year, $6.75-million contract he signed with the Wild on July 1, 2018, and has a goal and 10 points in 100 games for Minnesota.
