The NHL and the NHLPA have agreed to extend all expiring contracts until the end of October, per Sportsnet reporter Elliotte Friedman.

Normally, the league year runs from July 1 to June 30. However, the NHL season was delayed and eventually cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to this, the league had to move the playoffs, which are now expected to begin at the end of July. What this does is allow players on expiring deals to play in the playoffs for their team, as normally by that time they would be free agents.

The NHL has been working on a way to return to play for well over a month now, and this was one small kink that had to be worked out as well. They have also worked on changing the playoff format, which will include 24 teams rather than the usual 16. At this point, no games have been scheduled yet, but training camps are set to begin July 10.
