NHL veteran Chris Thorburn announced Monday that he is retiring from professional hockey. The 37-year-old spent most of his NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers, but also had stints with the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, and most recently the St. Louis Blues.

In total, Thorburn played in 801 regular season games, in which he put up 53 goals and 81 assists. While he certainly wasn't known for his offensive abilities, he brought a lot of energy to lineups and was willing to drop the gloves with anybody. During the 2018-19 season, the last of his pro hockey career, he was able to win his first Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues.

“It was an unbelievable ride with a storybook ending. As tough as it is to close this chapter, I am excited for the new adventures ahead for myself and my family,” said Thorburn.

The Canadian born forward was selected in the second round (50th) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. In addition to his 801 regular season games, he was able to suit up for an additional four post season games in his career.
