A retired carpenter from San Diego just added a big sum of money to his retirement nest egg after auctioning off a rare, signed Connor McDavid rookie card. The card in question, McDavid's 2015-16 Upper Deck "The Cup" rookie patch autograph card (we'll post a photo of it below), sold for $135,811.20 in the Lelands Spring Classic Auction on Friday. The sale price includes a 20% buyer's fee that goes to the auction house.

While similar cards have sold for $50,000 and up, this one fetched even more as it was no.97, which, of course, is McDavid's jersey number with the Edmonton Oilers. There are 99 cards like it in the world, but only one is number 97.

The card's seller is only known as John. He did not want his last name published. He paid to be part of a hockey card case break at Jaspy's Sports Cards & Collectibles in Hermosa Beach, California.

"I'm recently retired after 30 years of being a carpenter. I had never really collected a card in my life. A friend of mine last year got me into breaking cards as a hobby and really enjoyed it," he told ESPN. "I picked Jaspy's because my father was a lifeguard in Hermosa Beach in the 1940s. His elementary school is across the street from Jaspy's."

This card is now the most lucrative to ever be part of a case break in Jaspy's history. The buyer of the card has not been revealed. You can view the bid history on the card during the auction here.
