Don Cherry gives his thoughts on the Mark Donnelly situation

Don Cherry, the former host of Hockey Night in Canada and one of the most well recognized figures throughout the entire sport, gave his thoughts on the recent controversy regarding Mark Donnelly.

For those who don't know, Donnelly was the Canucks anthem singer until this past weekend, when the team said they would no longer have him perform for their games. This came just shortly after it was announced that Donnelly was set to sing the anthem at an anti-mask rally in downtown Vancouver.

Cherry, who was fired just over a year ago by Sportsnet after controversial comments regarding immigrants on his segment ‘Coaches Corner', made it very clear he does not agree with the Canucks decision.

“When you give your opinion, you better be prepared to pay the price,” Cherry told the Toronto Sun's Joe Warmington. “Going to a ‘no-mask rally' was not the politically correct thing to do. You have to do what the left media want now. I should know.

“Would Mark Donnelly be in trouble expressing his opinion had it been in favour of masks and lockdowns?” Cherry asked.

While Cherry is free to give his opinions, he should know that despite many turning mask wearing into a political debate, that is not what it is meant to be. Masks are meant to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and can help save lives. There is nothing political about that. In fact, Conservative Party of Canada leader Erin O'Toole tweeted his support for mask wearing way back in April, and is certainly not a left-wing politician. Simply put, Donnelly made a choice and is being punished for it. Whether or not you agree with the harshness of the punishment can certainly be held for debate.
