Jeremy Roenick sues NBC for wrongful termination, claims anti-straight discrimination
Former NHLer turned hockey analyst Jeremy Roenick has filed a lawsuit against his former employer claiming he was discriminated against as a straight man and that the network was against him for his support of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Roenick, who played close to 1400 games in the NHL, was first suspended from his job with NBC Sports as a hockey analyst in December of 2019 after making off colour remarks about co-worker Kathryn Tappen on the popular podcast Spittin' Chiclets. He was told in February of 2020 that he would not be returning.
“I'm swimming with my wife and Kathryn, and they've got their bikinis on, and they look f—in' smokin',” he said on the podcast in December. “Ass and boobs everywhere. It's great.”
Roenick talked about a vacation to Portugal with his wife and Tappen where he made repeated references to the NBC Sports anchor's appearance and joked about the possibility of the three of them having sex together.
“If it really came to fruition, that would really be good, but it's never going to happen,” Roenick said.
Roenick is claiming that he asked his supervisor, Sam Flood, for permission to speak at the Republican National Convention in 2016. According to the suit, Flood responded: “I'm not saying what you can do. You know who you work for. You work for NBC. That would not look good on your NBC record.”
The lawsuit also points to a video involving NBC figure skating commentators Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir, which involved some vulgar language and an insinuation of an affair. The suit notes that neither Weir nor Lipinski were suspended or terminated.
Roenick alleges that he had also told Flood that Weir used “colorful commentary” about skaters' body parts during the 2018 Olympics. Flood allegedly responded that Weir “is gay and can say whatever.”
The lawsuit, filed in New York Supreme Court, accuses NBC of violating the state law against discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation
