Canucks unable to secure Nikita Tryamkin's services

After weeks of negotiations, the Vancouver Canucks were unable to sign defenseman Nikita Tryamkin, resulting in his accepting a one-year contract extension with his current club, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg. According to sources, Tryamkin's base salary will be 25 million rubles (a little under $350k USD) with 5 million in bonuses assuming certain point plateaus reached.

Speaking to Rick Dhaliwal of TSN 1040 Vancouver, Tryamkin's agent Todd Diamond said: "Nikita could not wait any longer, the risk was too high for him, he has not played since February. The Canucks can not do a deal right now due to cap issues & they do not want to add a 1 way deal right now."

The Canucks are cap-strapped at the moment. Unable to add any salary, according to Capfriendly, they will see a bit of relief when more than $9 million comes off the books after this season with UFAs Chris Tanev and Tyler Toffoli. The team does have multiple RFAs to resign and Tryamkin was not enough of a priority.

The 6'8" defenseman was selected by the Canucks in the third round in 2014, and played parts of two seasons with the club in 2016 and 2017. In 79 NHL games, Tryamkin produced three goals, eight assists, a -10 rating and 74 PIMs. He's played the last three years in Yekaterinburg, for a total of eight seasons with the club. In 338 KHL games, Tryamkin has 23 goals, 52 assists, a +32 rating and 359 PIMs. He's made the All-Star team twice and led the KHL in PIMs in 2017-28 with 109 in 51 games.
