The VHL (Supreme Hockey League) in Russia is mourning the death of one of its own today. 23-year-old forward Pavel Krutiy died after being rushed to a hospital directly from practice.

Krutiy had signed with HC Yuzhny Ural Orsk in the offseason, and was attending a regular training session when he felt unwell. After being examined by a team doctor, he was rushed to the hospital, where he died in the Intensive Care Unit. The preliminary diagnosis of the cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. Krutiy was not believed to have had experienced any symptoms in the past and did not have any medical history pointing to this condition.

In a statement issued earlier today, the league (the KHL's equivalent of the AHL) and the Russian Hockey Federation said that they will render financial assistance to Krutiy's family. The league has also promised a full investigation of the incident. In an interview with Sport Express, the team's general director Oleg Pivunov denied that Krutiy had collapsed after more than 8000 meters of hard running. He also confirmed that Krutiy had gone through all the necessary tests, including one for COVID-19 and the team's doctor had cleared him for full training.
