The Chicago Blackhawks, amidst speculation, have come out and said they are not planning on changing their team name.

There has been much speculation around the Blackhawks as of late, as teams such as the Washington Redskins of the NFL and the Cleveland Indians of the MLB are currently considering changing both their team names and logos. Critics have come out against these teams over the years, saying they demean Native Americans.

“The Chicago Blackhawks name and logo symbolizes an important and historic person, Black Hawk of Illinois' Sac & Fox Nation, whose leadership and life has inspired generations of Native Americans, veterans, and the public,” the team said in a statement.

“We celebrate Black Hawk's legacy by offering ongoing reverent examples of Native American culture, traditions and contributions, providing a platform for genuine dialogue with local and national Native American groups. As the team's popularity grew over the past decade, so did that platform and our work with these important organizations.”

It should be noted that in the recent years the franchise has invited Native American groups to games for pregame ovations as well as in-game performances. They also have a section on the team website that is devoted to the “legacy of Black Hawk.”
