In all, 11 players tested positive for COVID-19 out of 200 tests completed so far during Phase 2 of the NHL's Return to Play plan, which involves voluntary skates in small groups at various training facilities in Canada and the U.S.
"The inherent exposure of the strictly voluntary Phase Two is that the players aren't locked down from the public in any way," said TSN's Bob McKenzie while discussing Tampa Bay's positive cases. "And with case counts in [Florida] and [Arizona] skyrocketing of late, it should come as no surprise if NHL players in those hot spots will test positive."
With the facility now open again, Tampa Bay's players can resume on ice workouts. Not everyone may be happy with that, though. Lightning captain Steven Stamkos recently expressed concern with the NHL's plan to expand group sizes from six to 12 players on the ice at once with a very simple Tweet.
The NHL plans to open training camps on July 10th, with games expected to start near the end of the same month.
