According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the candidates for the head coaching position with the New Jersey Devils include incumbent Alain Nasreddine, who was named interim head coach back in December, former Vegas Golden Knights head coach Gerard Gallant, former Nashville Bench Boss Peter Laviolette, former Flyers and Kings head coach John Stevens, and a "mystery candidate." We now know who the candidate is. According to Friedman, it is Ruff.
Ruff's coaching record with the Sabres was 571-432-78-84. At the time of his firing in 2013, he was the longest tenured head coach in the NHL, having been with Buffalo since 1997. Just four months after being fired by the Sabres, he was announced as the new head coach of the Dallas Stars. He would last four seasons there, going 165-122-41. For all his time as head coach in the NHL, his best run at the Cup was in his second year (1998-99) with Buffalo, when the team would go all the way to the Finals, losing against (ironically) the Dallas Stars.
Ruff has been serving as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers since July of 2017.
