Auston Matthews tests positive for COVID-19
After word earlier Friday that five players and staff with the Tampa Bay Lightning had tested positive for COVID-19 comes another blow for the NHL's Return to Play Plan. The Toronto Sun is reporting that NHL Star and Toronto Maple Leafs player Auston Matthews has also tested positive for the Corona virus.
According to the report by Steve Simmons, Matthews has gone into quarantine in his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He's hoping to be healthy enough and eligible to travel to Toronto and participate in the opening of Leafs camp on July 10th.
The report also states Toronto goaltender Frederik Andersen had been living with Matthews in Arizona but has since moved out and left the state altogether. He has since tested negative. Arizona is one of several U.S. states that have seen a big spike in the number of positive COVID-19 cases in the last week or so.
The Leafs have yet to release a statement on the positive test. “There's no blueprint for this,” one source told Simmons. “This is not an ankle injury.”
Simmons also states in the report that several members of the Arizona Coyotes have also tested positive in recent days. They had apparently been training along side Matthews. How all of this will impact the NHL's plans to return this summer remains to be seen.
