Finally, some real movement in the NHL's bid to return this summer to award the Stanley Cup. In a release from the NHL's Public Relations Twitter account, an official date has been announced for the opening of training camps.

"The National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL) announced today that formal training camps (Phase 3) for the 24 teams resuming play will open on Friday, July 10, provided that medical and safety conditions allow and the parties have reached an overall agreement on resuming play. The length of training camp and, therefore, the start date for formal resumption of play (Phase 4) will be determined at a future date."

Right now, the league is in Phase 2, which allows players to skate at designated facilities. However, only five players are allowed on the ice at a time and no coaching staff is involved. Opening training camps will allow for the resumption of coaching and scrimmages involving entire teams.

While the NHL has not given an official date for the resumption of play, Sportsnet's Chris Johnston says with camps slated to open on July 10th, he's hearing games will start at the beginning of August.
