Marc Bergevin addresses the captaincy of the Montreal Canadiens
During his media availability on Monday afternoon, Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced that the team will play without a captain for the 2021-22 season. The news comes less than two months after it was reported that Shea Weber would miss the entire season due to multiple injuries he is dealing with.
This will be the first time since the 2014-15 season that the Canadiens have gone captain-less. During that season, Montreal went with four alternate captains, Andrei Markov, Max Pacioretty, Tomas Plekanec, and P.K. Subban.
Currently, Brendan Gallagher and Paul Byron are alternate captains for the Canadiens, which will mean head coach Dominique Ducharme will have to name a third before the season begins to comply with the NHL rules. That third alternate captain will more than likely be defenceman Jeff Petry. With Paul Byron out of the lineup until January, an interim alternate captain will have to be named, with that possibly likely being either Ben Chiarot or Joel Edmundson.
