Malgin, who was drafted in the fourth round by Florida in 2015, was acquired by Toronto in a trade with the Panthers for Mason Marchment in February of 2020. With the delayed start of the 2020-21 season, Toronto decided to loan Malgin to Lausanne in Switzerland to begin the year. However, he would end up staying with the team for the entire season.
Malgin, a right-shooting centre, has played a total of 192 games in the NHL, mostly with the Florida Panthers. He recorded 28 goals and 60 points over that span. Both his mother and father are from Russia. However, Malgin was born and raised in Switzerland. Toronto maintains his NHL rights at least until he turns 27, at which time he would become an unrestricted free agent.
