In September, the Montreal Canadiens went out and acquired defenceman Joel Edmundson from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a 2020 5th round pick. A few days after the trade, the Canadiens re-signed Edmundson, who was set to be a UFA on October 9th, to a four-year contract worth $14 million ($3.5 million AAV).

A few months following the trade, and signing, Edmundson discussed how big of a Habs fan his father is, and how special it is to both Edmundson and his father that he is in Montreal.

Before heading into the Toronto bubble for the playoffs with Carolina, Edmundson received news that his father had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

This is what Edmundson had to say about his move to Montreal, and his father:

"My dad's going through a tough time right now. Right before we went into the bubble for the playoffs, I found out he's got lung cancer. To share the news that I got traded to Montreal - it's always been his favourite team - it brought me back to when I was growing up at home, and in his office, all of the walls are painted Canadiens colours. Me going to Montreal, it put him over the top. It's been exciting for us."

Edmundson, 27, was drafted in the second round, 46th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2011 NHL entry draft. In 337 regular season games, he's tallied 72 points (20 G, 52 A), 320 penalty minutes, and is a +25. In 53 career playoff games, Edmundson has recorded 15 points (6 G, 9 A), 34 penalty minutes, and is a +10. He was a part of the St. Louis Blues Stanley Cup winning team during the 2018-19 season.

Internationally, Edmundson has represented Canada once, at the 2018 IIHF World Hockey Championships. In 9 games, he had 4 points (1 G, 3 A), 12 penalty minutes, and was a +11 as Canada finished fourth following a loss to the USA in the bronze medal game.
