With day one of Phase 3 and the beginning of training camp upon us, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the return of NHL hockey in less than three weeks time. For the Toronto Maple Leafs, the first day of training camp came and went with several noteworthy items hitting the airways, including the conspicuous absence of defender Timothy Liljegren, who was declared "unfit to play" on Monday morning.

Now, this does not necessarily mean Liljegren will be excluded from the remainder of camp, but it is worth mentioning that he was the only player not on the ice for practice. Given the Leafs' defensive depth, it is possible that we have seen the last of Liljegren in 2019-20.

The Leafs updated do not end there, as superstar center Auston Matthews took to the ice with his teammates on Monday, following his positive COVID-19 results, just a few short seeks ago.

Matthews commented that he felt fine during his recovery, and for the most part, was asymptomatic while the virus ran its course.

Not all of the news from day one of camp was hockey-related, as former Leafs enforcer Mark Fraser took to Twitter to celebrate the organization for standing in solidarity with the "#BlackLivesMatter" movement. The players and staff wore Black Lives Matter throughout the day's events to show their support for the cause.

Fraser, who is one of many black former NHLers who have joined in this very important movement, had spent four seasons in Toronto from 2011-2014, two with the Leafs' AHL affiliate Marlies and two with the Maple Leafs.

Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe spoke with the media following the morning session, addressing the club's desire to support the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

"On a day when everyone wants to talk about hockey and was excited to get back to playing, it's important to have that Black Lives Matter movement be prevalent, and we want to make sure that's not lost in all of this."
