NHL faces potential major setback as hub city hospital forced to close down due to COVID-19 outbreak
A hospital located in Edmonton was forced to shut its doors to the public due to a full-facility COVID-19 outbreak, according to reports.
This could turn into a huge problem for the NHL in its plans to return to play, as Edmonton and Toronto were chosen as the two hub cities to host the playoff games, which are expected to begin in less than a month's time. Since making their decisions on the hub cities, the league has already gone ahead and released game time schedules, and many other major decisions. If they were to have to choose another hub city due to this hospital closing its doors, it could result in an even longer delay in a return to play.
It should be noted that NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly has said “at this point” he doesn't expect the outbreak to impact the league's hub city announcement.
The hospital which was forced to shut its doors is Misericordia. They released a statement earlier today, part of which stated:
“In order to reduce the risk of further transmission of COVID-19, all services at the Misericordia are temporarily closed to incoming patients. Patients are being contacted and will be cared for and/or rescheduled at another Edmonton hospital.”
Unfortunately, the outbreak at Misericordia has resulted in the death of three patients, along with another 20 patients and 15 staff infected with the virus. Expect to hear more on this in the upcoming days.
