As for next season, the NHL remains focused solely on a full, 82-game season despite a late start in December or January. They will try to squeeze it in, which means potential for Cup final next summer— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) July 4, 2020
The 2019-20 season is still underway, currently in Phase 2 of the Return to Play Plan. Players have the option of participating voluntarily in small group workouts at their team's training facilities.
Phase 3 will involve team training camps and is set to begin on July 13, three days later than originally planned. Phase 4 will be the start of the post-season and does not currently have a set start date.
Despite the delays due to the coronavirus pause that began on March 12, LeBrun reports that the NHL will “try to squeeze” in the next season. This means that it is possible that the 2020-21 Stanley Cup finals will extend into the summer.
