The hub city to host the Stanley Cup finals has been named
With Toronto and Edmonton having been announced as the NHL's two hub cities, one question has surfaced repeatedly and prior to Thursday, we have not had the answer. Who will host the Stanley Cup finals?
With the NHL electing to forego resuming play in the US in favor of using two Canadian hub cities, fans have been curious as to whether Toronto would play host to the Stanley Cup finals, with all of its history and the fact that it's one of the NHL's largest markets or if that honor would go to Edmonton, since it has the lower number of COVID-19 cases of the two. TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie revealed on Thursday that the finals, should play actually resume, will be played in Edmonton.
McKenzie speculated that the rationale behind the decision may be the public health & safety factor and the lower risk of league officials, players and staff becoming infected, due to a much lower number of confirmed cases in Edmonton.
Previous to Toronto and Edmonton being selected as the hub cities, Vancouver, Chicago and Vegas were all being considered. Though Vegas had been a front-runner all along, the rising number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the US led to the NHL and NHLPA's decision to use two Canadian hubs. One in the East and one in the West, for obvious reasons.
