On March 6, Jesperi Kotkaniemi injured his spleen and it appeared he would be out for the remainder of the season. In April he was cleared for off-ice workouts, but would require months of rehab before he would be cleared for contact.

The coronavirus pause began on March 12 and has given Kotkaniemi the time needed to heal. He is currently making transportation arrangements to North America from Finland.

Kotkaniemi will return to the Canadiens fully available to play as they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins.
