Sonny Milano lands PTO with Western Conference team
After not being signed by an NHL team all summer, it looks as if unrestricted free agent forward Sonny Milano will have to earn a contract at training camp.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Calgary Flames are signing Sonny Milano to a professional tryout contract and he will be at training camp with the team later this week.
It's still unclear as to why teams were hesitant to sign the 26-year-old, but one of the reasons could be his concussion history, which DailyFaceoff's Frank Seravalli said on Sportsnet 960 radio less than a week ago.
Milano, a native of Massapequa (New York), had a career-year with the Anaheim Ducks during the 2021-22 season. In 66 games, Milano put up 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists), ten penalty minutes and was a minus-nine.
Most famously last season, Milano connected with fellow Ducks forward Trevor Zegras for the "alley-oop" goal against the Buffalo Sabres. Zegras put the puck on his stick behind the net, flipped it over the net to Milano, who batted it in.
The Flames currently have $2,136,667 in cap space, so signing Milano at the end of training camp shouldn't be much of an issue and he would be perfect in a middle-six role.
