Stone, 32, has played the last six seasons for Calgary, but the addition of MacKenzie Weegar has relegated him to 'expendable,' hence the tryout. The Flames and Stone have a funny history.
Initially acquired from Arizona in 2017, the right-shot defender was signed to and bought out from a three-year deal and later re-signed to a much lower cap-hit by Flames' GM Brad Treliving.
Calgary now has two PTOs scheduled to join their camp, and they have $2.1 million in cap space, per CapFriendly. If they opt to sign Stone, he will occupy their 7th defense spot behind Weegar, Rasmus Andersson, and Chris Tanev. Stone scored 6 points in 11 games last season, which is way higher than his normal pace; he has 134 points in 504 games between Calgary and Arizona.
Stone probably could have taken a tryout elsewhere, but if he and the Flames can find a fit, why not stay put? The Flames blue-line was banged up, especially in the playoffs, so depth could be critical for Calgary; Eakin and Stone are solid adds to this group, should Treliving like what he sees.
