A sick Jonathan Bernier was forced to get dressed and get between the pipes for Detroit after fellow goalie Jimmy Howard had to leave the game with an apparent groin injury. Bernier was supposed to start but was scratched right before the game against Toronto due to an illness.

Howard got the start instead but left the game after Toronto's third goal scored by John Tavares. Howard went down in pain and was seen hobbling down the tunnel towards the team's dressing room.

The game was stopped briefly as Bernier dressed and took the ice. The emergency backup is Josh Block, the team's practice goalie.
