As 29-year-old defenceman Torey Krug prepares to enter the NHL bubble in Toronto with his Boston Bruins teammates, he knows this may his last run of games with them. Krug will be a free agent at the end of this season and his current team's cap situation will make it difficult to keep him in Boston.

"“It's no secret that this could potentially could be the last run I have at the Cup with this group," Krug told reporters Friday."

"I'm just trying to enjoy it. …. I'm still willing to sacrifice and do anything for this group.”

Make no mistake, should Krug start accepting offers from other teams, he'll get plenty of them to contemplate. He's currently on the final year of a four-year contract that paid him $5.25 million per season, a steal for a left-shot blueliner who put up 50-plus points for three consecutive seasons before this one. When the NHL suspended play on March 12th, Krug had nine goals and 49 points in 61 games and was on pace to easily break his previous career points high of 59.

The Bruins are currently less than one player's minimum annual salary away from the cap of $81.5 million and that's only because Kevan Miller's $2.5 million annual salary has been placed on long-term injured reserve. Not only that, but the cap limit will remain flat for at least the next three seasons. Once the 24-team Return to Play format ends, Boston will need to decide what to do with restricted free agents Anders Bjork, Jake DeBrusk and Matt Grzelcyk, as well as pending free agents Joakim Nordstrom and Zdeno Chara, should the 43-year-old decide to continue playing.

But that isn't the only issue the Bruins are facing. After 2020-21, David Krecji, Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halak will be UFAS, while names like Ondrek Kase, Brandon Carlo and Nick Ritchie will be looking for new RFA deals. While keeping Krug isn't impossible, it will be anything but easy and he appears to be very aware of that.
