Rangers former first-rounder to remain in Sweden next season

While the New York Rangers remain focused on their upcoming series against the Carolina Hurricanes to determine who will advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they have decided to grant former first round draft pick Lias Andersson permission to remain in his native Sweden next season to resume playing in HV71.

The decision came following long negotiations between Andersson, his agent and the Rangers brass.

"I want to thank the Rangers for understanding my situation and my desire to play in HV71. I found my game at the end of last season and look forward to continuing in HV71. During the years in HV71 and Jönköping, I have acquired many good memories and positive feelings that I will build on when we reunite at the end of July." said Andersson in a press release with HV71 on Friday.

HV71's sports director Johan Hult also commented, expressing his gratitude to the Rangers and his excitement for Andersson's return in 2020-21.

"He showed immediately when he came to us what qualities he has. Both with his hockey skills, but also with his attitude that spreads to the whole team. We have since last season ended had a good dialogue with the New York Rangers, Lias and his agent about a continuation with us and we are of course very happy now that it is ready."

Andersson - whose most memorable hockey moment came in 2018, when he tossed his WJC silver medal into the crowd after a loss to Canada in the finals - had previously aired his displeasure with the organizing due to declining ice time and, ultimately, a demotion to the AHL. The skilled Swede decided to return home, on loan from the Rangers to HV71.

The Rangers still retain Andersson's rights should he decide to return to the NHL.
