Pens avoid the worst with key player returning to camp

With the qualifying round set to begin next weekend, the Pittsburgh Penguins had been crossing their fingers that captain Sidney Crosby would make his much anticipated return prior to the start of their qualifying round series with the Montreal Canadiens.

Head coach Mike Sullivan confirmed late Thursday that Crosby was still labelled "unfit to play" in the team's intra-squad match up. However, Crosby did take to the ice on his own prior to the game. On Friday, however, Sid the Kid made his return, queuing a huge sigh of relief from the Pens fanbase.

Though the Pens more than held their own this season, enduring long stretches without key players in the lineup, there aren't many who would be content with beginning the qualifying round without the captain. Thankfully, it looks as though they won't have to worry about that.

Crosby suited up in just 41 contests this season, registering 47 points. Pittsburgh took the season series with Montreal 2-1 in 2019-20, but if there's a goalie who can potentially steal a round, it's Carey Price.

Though the team has shown its ability to keep the ship moving without Crosby in the lineup, with Malkin taking the reigns, it's safe to say that Sullivan and company are thankful to be trucking along through camp with a full compliment of players,
in anticipation of a tough series against the Habs.
