Canada Forced to Use Emergency Goaltender Due to Equipment Delay
Canada's Spengler Cup team will be forced to employ an emergency goalie for Tuesday's match against HC Davos. Rostered goalie Michael DiPietro is awaiting the arrival of his equipment and is unavailable for action.
DiPietro is merely another victim of travel issues this year, as lots of folks have run into trouble. This holiday season, thousands of people have been affected by the bilateral issue of understaffing in airports and a nasty winter storm in the northeastern part of North America.
As such, Canada has received approval to start dual-citizen goaltender Connor Hughes in net. Hughes plays for Fribourg-Gotteron HC in the Swiss-A league, so he was on-hand for the tournament and more than happy to suit up.
DiPietro will assume his post as starting goaltender as soon as his equipment lands, which could be any day now.
Michael Hutchinson started yesterday's game for Canada, so the option to start Hughes suggests they aren't interested in running him on back-to-back days.
