Connor Bedard lands big role with Regina ahead of his draft year
Just a day before they opened their 2022-23 season, the Regina Pats made an historic announcement.
The team announced that they've named projected 2023 first overall pick Connor Bedard captain. Bedard becomes the youngest captain in the 105-year history of the Regina Pats and the 81st captain in franchise history.
"It's an exciting day for everyone as we start a new season," Regina Pats GM and head coach John Paddock said. "We had a leadership change, losing two key guys last year with Logan Nijhoff and Ryker Evans gone. In Connor, we could see very early that he sets a good example on and off the ice, as well as in his preparation, wanting to win, and that he was going to be a captain."
Bedard, a native of North Vancouver (British Columbia), had a solid season with Regina as a 16-year-old last year, putting up 100 points (51 goals, 49 assists) in 62 games.
He went on to represent Canada at this summer's World Junior Championship where he helped the team win gold, while recording eight points along the way. Canada will look to Bedard to help them win back-to-back gold medals this December in Halifax and Moncton at the 2023 World Juniors.
