Winnipeg Jets star centerman Mark Scheifele sat down with 32 Thoughts' Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek to give his thoughts on the recent changes within his organization.
Scheifele spoke with the Sportnet reporters during the NHL Media Tour over the weekend. The primary focus of the conversation - changes in Winnipeg. New Jets' head coach Rick Bowness recently stripped long-time leader Blake Wheeler of his captaincy on Friday. Scheifele commented on the move, "I was definitely shocked. Didn't see it coming."
Scheifele was further asked if the captaincy is something he would be interested in taking over this season or in the future.
Scheifele did not volunteer for the role but did say, "I definitely look at myself as a leader. I think we have a lot of leaders on our team. I think me and Josh [Morrissey], we're younger. We have a little bit of a different voice, so I think this gives an opportunity for other guys to step in, and I think it's not just going to be one or two guys. I think it has to be a collective." This sentiments reflects what Bowness said at the press release about the team's captaincy, "It is the determination of the coaching staff that we will enter the 2022-23 season without a specific captain, but rather a group of assistants still to be determined."
Admittedly, Scheifele was very upset after the results of last year. In his exit interview from last season, he expressed some uncertainty about his future, "I feel like I'm in the prime of my career, and I want to be a part of a winning team." He reiterated that he did not ask for a trade. He simply sought clarity in the future in Winnipeg.
