Canes ownership quietly gives GM Waddell seal of approval
It's been fairly common the last couple of years for teams to announce extensions for general managers. In the case of the Carolina Hurricanes, it's happened without little being said publicly.
TSN's Pierre LeBrun is reporting that Waddell has "quietly signed a new contract with the Canes to remain as GM." It's not known for how long, but if Waddell can continue with what he's done for the team so far, the keys are likely his for as long as he wants.
After close to a decade of missing the playoffs, the last four seasons have been a complete turnaround for the team. Through the draft, as well as through trades and free agent signings, Waddell has helped build the Canes into a contender. He may have been named GM in 2018, but he's been with the organization that owns the team as a high level executive since 2014. IN addition to being GM of Carolina, he is also president.
Waddell's moves over the last summer included acquiring Brett Burns from San Jose, and getting Max Pacioretty from Vegas for virtually nothing (future considerations). However, Pacioretty did injure himself in training following the trade and may not play until the new year.
