Goaltender Jack Campbell has yet to play a game for the Edmonton Oilers, but he's already under massive pressure from media in the city. In a new column, Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun said the team's entire hopes for a Stanley Cup rests squarely on Campbell's shoulders.
"It's on him now. The season. The Cup dreams. All of it.
The Oilers need to get some winning done before Connor McDavid's contract expires in four seasons and Leon Drasaitl's expires in three. How Campbell performs will be no small part of the equation.
It's a responsibility and a pressure he has no choice but to get comfortable with." It's an interesting statement to make in the same paragraph that you mention both McDavid and Draisaitl. McDavid is arguably the best hockey player on the planet right now, and Draisaitl doesn't lag too far behind. However, it seems it's Campbell's Cup to win or lose from this moment forward. Tychkowski takes what appears to be a subtle jab at the netminder.
It's a little ironic, if not concerning, that the guy the Oilers are trusting to the lead them through the playoffs only has 14 career post-season games to his credit (6-8 after a seven-game, opening round losses to the Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning the last two years), but Campbell's reviews are good.
Campbell is about to begin year one of a five-year deal with the Oilers. It sounds like those five years will be long ones for him if he doesn't get the job done. Campbell seems to have jumped from one media hothouse to another.
