Flames netminder Jacob Markstrom thinks team will be better in 2022-23 than last year
The Calgary Flames have undergone a big facelift this off-season. Losing franchise player Johnny Gaudreau to the Columbus Blue Jackets in free agency, then just over a week later moving Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers and they followed that up by trading Sean Monahan to the Montreal Canadiens last week.
General manager Brad Treliving has done a good job to replace those players, or at least the impact they had on the roster. In the trade with Florida, he was able to acquire Jonathan Huberdeau, as well as defenceman MacKenzie Weegar and prospect Cole Schwindt. Nearly a week ago, Treliving made another big splash, signing Stanley Cup champion Nazem Kadri to a seven-year contract.
During the NHL European Player Media Tour on Wednesday, Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom told Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman that he believes the team will be better during the 2022-23 season.
He went on to add, "Thoughts go through your mind, for sure. But I think really, really quick (Treliving) really calmed everyone down and said, 'We're not gonna rebuild, we're gonna be competitive and wait and see what we can add up. It's not just gonna be lay down and see what's left over.'
"He really went out there and took what he wanted. I think we've got a great team on paper, and now we've got to put it together on the ice."
The Flames will open their 2022-23 season at home on October 13th when they welcome the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche to town.
