Brett was actually drafted by Calgary back in 2007 (179th overall). He played a total of 18 games with the Flames before being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. The 35-year-old is a veteran of more than 1000 professional hockey games. However, he's managed just 60 in the NHL with Calgary, Carolina and Minnesota. Since 2015-16, he has played exclusively with the Ontario Reign of the AHL, and was the team's captain when he became a free agent.
This isn't even close to the first time members of the Sutter family have crossed paths in hockey. It's likely the most prolific bloodline in the hockey world when it comes to producing players, coaches and executives. It's not even the first time Brett and Darryl have come in close contact. The elder Sutter was general manager of the Calgary Flames when Brett was drafted. He also took some heat from media at the time for recalling his son to the Flames in the first year of his career. While Darryl was coaching the L.A. Kings, Brett was traded there from the Minnesota Wild, but played only in the AHL after that. Going the other way was Scott Sabourin in a one-for-one deal.
