Dan Carcillo Condemns Testimony of Hockey Canada Officials
Former NHLer & current player safety advocate Dan Carcillo has an outspoken history with regards to the culture of hockey, specifically the CHL & NHL. Carcillo's critique of the NHL--that the league continues to fail its players regarding head injuries--has ruffled more than a few feathers across the hockey world. His outspokenness has also sounded the alarm on the CHL & its 'culture of hazing & abuse' that, until recently, was credibly denied. However, in light of the recent allegations & inquiries into Hockey Canada, it would appear that Carcillo might be on to something.
Carcillo's own story is as detailed as it is gut-wrenching. He has publicly battled with former teammates, media personalities, and anyone else who contradicted what he had to say. An extremely difficult position to be in, Carcillo persevered in his mission to expose the truth, and today he released a statement on the testimony offered today in the House of Commons:
Canadian Hockey League. I have shared my stories of abuse as a child playing in this league, as have dozens of others. I lead this class action on behalf of scores of children and young people who were abused while playing in the CHL, just like my teammates and I were.
I heard the testimony that Dan Mackenzie, David Branch, Gilles Courteau and Ron Robison, the leaders of junior hockey in Canada, gave before a House of Commons Committee this afternoon. These individuals used their appearances before that committee as an opportunity to litigate my class action in public, in circumstances where I lacked any opportunity to respond.
Their testimony today denied the existence of systemic and ongoing problems in junior hockey. I disagree. I believe that there is a culture of hazing and abuse in the CHL. I believe that there is, and
has long been, system-wide knowledge of this culture. Systemic failures continue to occur in protecting the children and young people who play in the CHL. I believe the evidence will show this. I look forward to proving as much in Court, beginning with the certification hearing in my
class action in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice this November."
The hearing today was held before the House of Commons. Hockey Canada executives faced questioning from Members of Parliament, and the general vibe is that it did not look good for HC or its officials.
