Recently retired goaltender Cam Ward caused a flurry of speculation Thursday after he was spotted on the ice at Carolina Hurricanes' practice. Many wondered if the 35-year-old, who played parts of 13 seasons with Carolina, was returning to the team as an assistant coach or in some other type of management role. You can check out the photo that caused the speculation below, which was initially posted by radio host Adam Gold.

Turns out, all the speculation was for nothing. According to Sara Civian, who covers the Hurricanes for The Athletic, Cam Ward was around and called head coach Rod Brind'Amour to ask if he could attend practice, and Brind'Amour happily obliged. No one should read any more into it than that.

On August 28th of this year, Ward signed a one-day contract with the Hurricanes and subsequently retired from professional hockey. He left the game as the Hurricanes' franchise leaders in wins (318) and shutouts (27).
