While a July draft will be hard on all teams given that they won't have as much research on players in years past, one team that may have an extremely tough time is the Buffalo Sabres. It was pointed out today by Sabres beatwriter Lance Lysowski that the team hasn't and still does not employ a single scout to cover the WHL, nor do they have any in Russia or Finland. He also noted that the team has yet to replace its previous scout that covered the OHL.
This is obviously very bizarre given the fact they are a professional sports team and are lacking very essential employees. Most teams in the league have multiple scouts in all regions, yet for whatever reason the Sabres have chosen to go with none. This could both explain the lack of franchise success over the last decade, as well as the fan bases displeasure with Terry Pegula, the owner of the team. He is the one responsible for making these hires, and clearly doesn't seem to think its necessary. They will be a very interesting team to watch come draft day in July.
