Team Sweden loses another big name ahead of the World Junior Championships
More bad news for Team Sweden ahead of the World Junior Hockey Championship slated to get underway on Christmas Day. After it was recently announced that William Eklund, one of the top prospects in the 2021 NHL entry draft, would not be participating in the tournament due to a positive test for COVID-19, comes word that centre Karl Henriksson will also miss the Championship for the same reason.
"It came as a shock," the second round draft pick (58th overall) of the New York Rangers in 2019 told Sportexpressen. Henriksson added he does feel somewhat sick, but is mostly fine.
Henriksson has been playing for Frolunda of the SHL since 2018-19. This was his last opportunity to represent his home country at the Wold Junior Championship. He played for Sweden at the tournament last year, putting up one goal and two assists in seven games. He was expected to be the team's top-line centre at this year's WJC.
Henriksson is described in draft reports as a "gifted offensive center, strong with the puck, and a quick and agile skater."
