German hockey legend, brother of former NHLer, suspended by team on suspicion of doping
An apparent scandal has rocked the hockey world in Germany. Yannic Seidenberg, considered a legend in that country, has been suspended by his team after a routine test "deviated from the norm."
The test was conducted by the National Anti-doping Agency. No one has said what, exactly, showed up in the test. However, EHC München of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga has made the decision to suspend Seidenberg indefinitely for the time being.
Seidenberg has played more than 1,000 games in the top league in Germany. He has also participated in 173 international matches, ten World Cups, and was a key player for the German national team that unexpectedly took silver at the 2018 Winter Olympics. A teammate said Seidenberg is taking this very hard.
"I don't know all the details, but I do know that Yannick is not a doper. If you have deliberately doped, you should of course be punished, but that is not the case with Yannic. There must be another, unknown explanation," said Moritz Muller, captain of Germany's men's national hockey team.
"I spoke to him this morning and he is completely broken," Muller added.
Seidenberg, 38, was never drafted into the NHL. He spent one season in North America playing for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League in 2003-04. He is the younger brother of Dennis Seidenberg, who played for Philadelphia, Phoenix, Carolina, Florida, Boston, and the New York Islanders throughout his long NHL career.
