In completely unsurprising news, Hockey Canada has confirmed that the organization has hired outside counsel to investigate a third sexual assault claim, according to TSN's Rick Westhead. Hockey Canada provided no details on the incident as to the time, place, or specifics.
Hockey Canada currently sits dead center of two separate sexual assault investigations; one involving Canada's 2003 World Junior team and one involving its 2018 group. Anyone following the scandal knew there was more such cases under the surface there, so this news just confirms widely held suspicions.
Westhead writes, "Hockey Canada confirmed to me in addition to alleged incidents in 2003 and 2018, it has hired 2 Ottawa-area lawyers, Erin Durant & Brian Ward, to weigh merits of a 3rd sexual assault allegation. Durant & Ward have discretion to decide if formal investigation takes place, HC says.
Hockey Canada didn't provide any details about the third investigation, either timing of alleged incident(s), parties involved, or when complaint was received.
HC wrote lawyers Durant & Ward will 'manage the process moving forward...'"
Tens of thousands of people actively want new leadership within Hockey Canada, including representatives of Canada's legendary women's team, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and several current NHLers.
CEO Scott Smith recently received a vote of confidence from Hockey Canada's Board of Governors. Partnered with today's news, it seems unlikely that several members of the organization's leadership remain much longer.
Now a third set of allegations towards the entity with more likely on the way, it is as clear as it has ever been that Hockey Canada in its current state cannot be allowed to proceed. Deep change is needed, and the longer senior members live under the delusion to the contrary, the longer change will take, and the more painstaking it will be.
