Tensions were high last night in a QMJHL preseason match featuring the Quebec Ramparts and the Shawinigan Cataractes. With less than thirty-seconds remaining in the first period, Ramparts' head coach and general manager Patrick Roy was ejected from the game after contesting a penalty. F Théo Rochette was booked for tripping, and Roy let referees Nicolas Dutil and Olivier Gouin have it.

The former is the one who ultimately decided to eject the Hockey Hall of Famer, and knowing how apt Roy is to lose his temper, this is not necessarily a shock. Gouin officiated last year's semi-final game which saw Shawinigan defeat Roy's Ramparts in controversial fashion. You can bet the 4x Stanley Cup champion had this one circled on his calendar for some time.

The Ramparts earned a 6-3 victory over the Cataractes, avenging their ejected coach in an otherwise meaningless game. This is likely Roy's last year with the junior club, and he cannot be happy after losing in the semi-finals on a questionable goal.

Roy will have one last kick at the can, and then who knows what is next for him. A return to the NHL could lie in the cards, perhaps. After being a general manager and coach of a junior team, I do not know how much is left for him to undertake, and Roy would have no shortage of NHL clubs looking for his services.
