Suspension increased significantly for player who injured Pens' prospect Kirill Tankov

While Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Kirill Tankov continues to recover following a brutal hit from behind in the All-Russian Hockey League (formerly the VHL), the league has decided to significantly increase the suspension to the player that hit him. Artem Maltzev of Dynamo St. Petersburg was initially given a three game suspension for the hit. However, after reviewing it, the ARHL has decided to tack on another seven games to the sentence, bringing the total suspension to 10 games.

"The FHR (Russian Hockey Federation) and the league intend to continue their tough and principled fight against foul play in hockey. Long-term disqualifications will be imposed for repeated violations with injury to an opponent," reads a statement on the official website of the All-Russian Hockey League.

Tankov went head first into the boards following a push from Maltzev earlier this week. He was removed from the ice on a stretcher and immediately taken to the closest hospital where he was placed in intensive care. He has since had surgery on broken vertebrae. HIs recovery time is estimated to be about a year.

Tankov was drafted 218th overall by Pittsburgh in 2021. The 20-year-old was playing in his first game of the regular season when the injury occurred.
