In lieu of time behind bars, Vorobyov has been ordered to pay a fine of 2 million rubles. That's around $32,500 USD, the equivalent of about two weeks of Vorobyov's KHL salary.
Vorobyov was accused of giving a military enlistment officer around 170 rubles to avoid mandatary military service. That's just under $3000 USD. The officer himself was arrested, which led to the case again Vorobyov, as well as other Russian hockey players.
After being drafted 104th overall by the Flyers in 2015, Vorobyov came to North America to try and get a spot in the NHL. He played a total of 35 games between 2017 and 2020 before returning home. The forward scored two goals and added three assists in that span.
Meanwhile, Russian ice hockey player Anvar Suleimanov, who was charged along with Voyobyov for bribing a military official, received a sentence of five years in prison. However, the sentence was reduced by four years after the prosecutor in the case agreed to change the charge to attempted bribery. His lawyer said his hockey career will not be impacted in any way, and he expects the sentence will simply result on a postponement of Suleimanov's military service.
