LeBron James, Drake, Future being sued over rights to 'Black Ice' hockey film
Basketball star LeBron James and rappers Drake and Future are subjects in a $10 million lawsuit over the film 'Black Ice.' They are being accused of stealing the intellectual property rights to the film.
Billy Hunter, who is a former longtime head of the NBA Players Association and ex-federal prosecutor, is looking to gain a share of profits from the documentary and $10 million in damages. He is claiming to hold the legal rights to produce a film about the Colored Hockey League from 1895 to the 1930s.
"While the defendants LeBron James, Drake and Maverick Carter [LeBron's business partner] are internationally known and renowned in their respective fields of basketball and music, it does not afford them the right to steal another's intellectual property," says the suit filed by Hunter's attorney, Larry Hutcher.
The documentary is being directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Hubert Davis and will be showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10.
