Eighteen months ago, New Jersey Devils prospect Nikita Popugaev decided to quit hockey, burning his equipment and trying to become a social media influencer.

While he quickly gained popularity due to his antics, like bringing giant snakes into taxis, his Instagram account seemed to top out at 40,000 followers and that isn't likely what the 23-year-old had expected.

After a year and a half away from hockey, Popugaev decided to return, earning a professional tryout contract with HC Sochi in the KHL.

His pre-season performances must have gone well because according to Sport24.ru, HC Sochi has signed Popugaev to a one-year contract for the 2022-23 season.

In his last season of professional hockey, which came in 2020-21, Popugaev had six points (one goal, five assists), ten penalty minutes and was an even-rating in 25 games between Dynamo Moscow and HC Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk.
