Blue Jackets prospect Calvin Thurkauf signs unprecedented contract in Switzerland
While he hasn't been in the Columbus Blue Jackets organization since the 2019-20 season, 25-year-old Calvin Thurkauf remains a prospect of the team, but don't expect him to play with them ever again.
On Sunday, HC Lugano, a club in Switzerland's National League, announced a monster contract extension with Thurkauf, one that is extremely rare to see in any European league.
HC Lugano signed Thurkauf to a seven-year extension that will take the Zug native through the 2028-29 season. Normally contracts in Europe are for one or two years, with the odd three-year deal, so this is pretty unprecedented.
Thurkauf appeared in 50 games during the regular season last year, his first with HC Lugano. In those 50 games, he put up 35 points (sixteen goals, nineteen assists), 65 penalty minutes and was a plus-ten.
In addition to Thurkauf's signing, HC Lugano announced a three-year extension with former NHLer Mark Arcobello that will take him through the 2024-25 season.
